It took five years of work, testing, and research to develop this frame. The result is a 9-inch frame with standard geometry. The SAFIR 9 bearings, like all of Kuzma’s multi-point designs, are an in-house design consisting of four sharp pins resting on sapphire “cups.” This is yet another improvement over the design that has been used with great success in all Kuzma 4Point tonearms. The essence, heart, and soul of the SAFIR 9 tonearm is its extremely rigid, conical tonearm tube made of synthetic sapphire—the first implementation of its kind using this precious material for this purpose. Overall rigidity and resistance to any unwanted resonance are key natural properties of sapphire. As a result, it outperforms any tube used in any tonearm, remaining free of resonance up to a very high frequency of 5 kHz. The sapphire tonearm tube is mounted in a solid assembly of solid aluminum and brass blocks, providing an exceptionally rigid and mechanically quiet support for the tonearm tube itself, as well as for the “4Point” bearing spikes. This dissipates the vibrations that inevitably occur when the stylus tip moves across the grooves of an LP record. The two-piece brass counterweight with a locking mechanism precisely balances the tonearm. The tonearm’s azimuth and height can be adjusted easily, accurately, and precisely using the tools included in the set. The wiring is made from a single, unbroken length of cable. The SAFIR 9 features silver “wires” from Kondo.
