Simplicity Mk II
The Simplicity Mk II is the second iteration of the excellent turntable tonearm from the Swiss company Thales. The method used to correct angular error is patented by the company; for the Simplicity Mk II, it is 0.006º, a reduction of 0.002° compared to the first version. The Mk I used rubies for the bearings in the gimbal assembly. In the new version, these have been eliminated and replaced with miniature ball bearings using TTF (Thales-Tension-Free) technology. The goal is to combine the advantages of “stone” bearings (damping properties, single point of support) with those of ball bearings (load-bearing capacity). TTF technology ensures very low friction, zero backlash, and also serves as an integrated vibration-damping system. The resonance of the two resonance tubes is carefully tuned in non-harmonic proportions to achieve good damping characteristics. Subminiature bearings are used to support the headshell, ensuring perfectly smooth movement. Three different counterweight options allow for the use of cartridges with a wide range of mass, from 7 to 23 grams. The internal wiring of the tonearm is exceptionally flexible and made of the purest copper. In the first version, the wires were routed through one of the tonearm’s tubes. In the new version, the wires have been separated, and each channel is routed separately through its own tube. Azimuth adjustment is easier and more precise in the new version. The cartridge is calibrated using a special tool included with the tonearm. The frame is available in three color finishes: brown, gray, and black. The frame can be ordered with various cable connection options.
