LP – S Class Every music lover associates the abbreviation “LP” with a long-playing record. In the case of the Benza cartridge, things are a little different… LP stands for Luis Pires—a Portuguese man born in Mozambique, a music lover and audio enthusiast, and the owner of the ebony wood used to craft the LP’s body. Mr. Pires encouraged Albert Lukaschka to experiment with ebony as the housing material for the Ruby II series cartridge (the version without a wooden body). The combination of Ruby’s excellent mechanical properties with the superb damping qualities of ebony has resulted in extraordinary musicality and precision in sound reproduction. In this version, the weight of the voice coil—made from a compound called Hybrid Magnet, which contains boron, neodymium, and iron—has been reduced. This material has excellent magnetic properties, but its practical application is limited to a narrow group of the most technologically advanced designs that use very strong H-shaped magnets. The reduction in coil weight has been offset by the use of a stronger magnet. The entire vibrating assembly is housed in a very rigid brass body.
The LP S features a Micro Ridge-cut stylus. Its shape has been designed to ensure maximum tracking precision. This was made possible by a special diamond-cutting technology that allows for a profile measuring 5 x 120 µm. The stylus is mounted on a support made of a boron rod with a diameter of 0.28 mm. The entire process is carried out under a high-powered microscope in a dust-free environment. The ultra-lightweight, ultra-rigid tracking system produced through this process delivers exceptional resolution, linearity, and outstanding dynamics.
