Top Wing
Top Wing is a Japanese manufacturer of turntable cartridges. It is yet another example of how there is always something new to discover in cartridges. Top Wing cartridges are based on a technology called the “Coreless straight-flux system.” These cartridges are closer in design to MM than to MC. The magnet is mounted on a support, and the coils are arranged in a V-shape directly above it. The entire moving system has a significantly lower mass, which allows for reading the record without any loss of information, unlike in a standard MM system.

They also offer the advantage of MM cartridges. They allow for “needle replacement” at a significantly lower cost than what you’d pay to retip an MC cartridge. Hiromu Meguro is the designer behind this project. He collaborated on the design of the Grace F-8 and F-9 cartridges at Shinagawa Musen Co. He also participated in the development of such legends of the analog world as the Nakamichi Dragon CT and TX-1000. The other members of Top Wing are Yasuhiro Noguchi and Koichi Sasakihara.
